Complete Tennessee Voter ID Laws
* First time voters who registered to vote by mail must bring a current photo identification with voter’s name and photo OR if the photo identification is expired, the voter must also present one of the following: a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document that shows the voter’s name and address.
**Rule does not apply for those voting at licensed nursing homes, voters who are hospitalized, voters with a religious objection to being photographed, and voters who are indigent and unable to obtain a photo ID without paying a fee
Students who lived in Tennessee before moving elsewhere to attend school, and who wish to establish or keep their Tennessee voting residency (i.e., at their parents’ Tennessee address), should have no problem doing so unless they have already registered to vote in another state. Students attending school in Tennessee should be able to register and vote at their school address if they intend to make that place their residence and there is some objective indication of their intent.
Individuals convicted of a felony are ineligible to vote while incarcerated, on parole, or on probation. Individuals convicted of a felony since 1981–except for some felonies such as murder, rape, treason and voter fraud–may apply to the Board of Probation and Parole to have their voting rights restored once their sentence is completed. The law in Tennessee is somewhat complex, for more information please review this resource.
